Why did you start studying fashion? / Pourquoi avez vous commencé à étudier la mode?

The other night, I dreamt that I was famous. Don't make fun of me, I am sure that you had this dream once at least. Anyway, I was famous enough for someone wants to interview me. He asked me this question:

Why did you start studying fashion?

Even if it is a dream, why don't answer now? Maybe I won't be famous at all and why I started studying fashion will still a mystery. Let's start.

One person gave me the desire to study fashion : Paco Rabanne. I remember, I was little, but I can't remember how old I was; I went to the living room, my parents where watching TV, the news exactly. I don't know what the subject was but my child's eyes were fascinated by what was on TV. It was a video of Paco Rabanne's 1966 fashion show, "12 robes importables en matériaux contemporains" (12 unwearable in modern materials). My inspiration started there, fashion wasn't nice fabrics well sewn anymore, it was art, freedom to do what I want, my support would be the body as canvas for painters.

I did not start so bad when, in high school, I chose a major in mechanics, studying metal and how to work with it, how to shape it. After all, Rabanne started studying architecture before being a fashion designer.

After high school, for a lot of people, I turned around, but not really if we look deeper. I went to an art school, learning how to use my hands instead of asking to a machine to create what I want. Two years in fashion have been the chance to learn about other fashion designers, as great as Paco Rabanne, who  matter to me now.
I learnt about Issey Miyake. Thinking if a garment is wearable wasn't his priority, he always looked for new ways to create clothes. Fashion is research, it is not just pretty drawings! His Pleats Please period was awesome, a lot of micro-pleats which create a texture and a big fullness. I loved his "A piece of Cloth" concept, he created a stitch, without seam and sold it as a tube. He created something, but the garment, at the end, it was the customer's work. It is like a shared creation.

Another big figure of my fashion world is late Alexander McQueen. With him fashion wasn't really fashion. It was a game, a show, a dream! It was like he had succeeded in forgetting the body. That's why his work was more than awesome to me. I don't grow tired of looking at my Alexander McQueen book, looking at all his work. He was a genius and commited suicide wasn't the smarter thing he did. I will miss his creations, forever.

And, finally, here I am, after three years studying mechanics in high school, one year studying art, two years studying fashion and a few time staying in the United States.

L'autre nuit, j'ai rêvé que j'étais célèbre. Ne vous moquez pas de moi, je suis sure que vous avez fait ce rêve au moins une fois. Bref, j'étais assez célèbre pour que quelqu'un veille m'interviewer. Il me posa cette question:

Pourquoi avez vous commencé à étudier la mode?

Même si c'est un rêve, pourquoi ne pas répondre maintenant? Peut-être que je ne serais pas célèbre du tout et pourquoi j'ai commencé à étudier la mode restera un mystère. Commençons.

Une personne m'a donné l'envie d'étudier la mode : Paco Rabanne. Je me rappelle, j'étais petite, mais je ne peux me rappeler l'âge que j'avais; je suis allée dans le salon, mes parents regardaient la télévision, le journal exactement. Je ne sais pas quel était le sujet mais mes yeux d'enfants étaient fascinés par ce qu'il y avait à la télévision. C'était une vidéo de la collection de 1966 de Paco Rabanne, "12 robes importables en matériaux contemporains". Mon inspiration a commencé ici, la mode n'était plus de beaux tissus bien cousus, c'était de l'art, la liberté de faire ce que je voulais, mon support allait être le corps comme la toile pour les peintres.

Je n'ai pas si mal commencé lorsque, au lycée, j'ai choisi d'étudier la mécanique, étudiant le métal et comment travailler avec, comment le modeler. Après tout, Rabanne a commencé à étudier l'architecture avant d'être un créateur de mode.

Après le lycée, pour beaucoup, j'ai fait volte-face, mais pas vraiment si on regarde en profondeur. Je suis allée en école d'art, apprendre à utiliser mes mains au lieu de demander à une machine de créer ce que je veux. Deux années en mode ont été la chance d'apprendre à propos d'autres créateurs de mode, aussi géniaux que Paco Rabanne, qui comptent pour moi maintenant.

J'ai appris à propos de Issey Miyake. Penser si un vêtement is portable n'était pas sa priorité, il a toujours cherché des nouvelles façons de créer des vêtements. La mode est recherche, ce n'est pas juste de jolis dessins! Sa période "Pleats Please" (Des plis s'il vous plaît) était géniale, beaucoup de micro-plis qui créent une texture et une grande ampleur. J'ai adoré son concept "A piece of Cloth" (Un seul morceau) il a créé une maille, sans couture et l'a vendu sous la forme d'un tube. Il a créé quelque chose, mais le vêtement, à la fin, était le travail du client. C'est comme une création partagée.

Une autre grande figure de mon monde de la mode est feu Alexander McQueen. Avec lui la mode n'était pas vraiment de la mode. C'était un jeu, un spectacle, un rêve! C'était comme s'il avait réussi à oublier le corps. C'est pourquoi son travail était encore plus génial pour moi. Je ne me lasse pas de regarder mon livre sur Alexander McQueen, regarder tout son travail. Il était un génie et se suicider n'était pas la chose la plus intelligente qu'il ait fait. Ses créations me manqueront, à jamais.

Et, finalement, me voilà, après trois ans à étudier la mécanique au lycée, un an à étudier l'art, deux ans à étudier la mode et un peu de temps aux Etats-Unis…
